The Monkey Head Nebula, also known as NGC 2174, is an emission nebula located in the constellation Orion, about 6,400 light-years away from Earth. It spans approximately 40 light-years across and is rich in hydrogen gas, which glows in vibrant red hues when ionized by the intense ultraviolet radiation from young, hot stars within the nebula. The nebula’s distinct, sculpted shape resembles a monkey's head, giving it its popular name. NGC 2174 is a region of active star formation, with new stars emerging from the dense clouds of gas and dust. Though faint, it is a beautiful target for astrophotography, especially when captured in narrowband filters that highlight its intricate structure.
